Banking scams are on the increase. Do you know how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud?
If you receive a call or an email you’re not expecting from your bank, or you see something on social media promising money back from your bank, you should be suspicious.
Your bank will:
- NEVER ask for your account details or PIN over the phone. Do not tell anyone this information, no matter who they claim to be or if they already know some of your details;
- NEVER ask you to withdraw money and send it to them via a courier, taxi or by any other means.
- don’t press 1 on your phone or follow any other instructions given in an unsolicited automated message;
- don’t click on any buttons or links in unsolicited emails, even if they look official;
- contact your bank immediately if you think you may have made a payment to a scammer - or given a scammer your account details by mistake;
- get in touch with your bank straight away if you are worried about a fraudulent payment from your account;
- if you want to call your bank, use the phone number on your bank statement or a publicly listed number (don’t use a number given to you by a cold caller).
